Around the World in 28 Days

This month, our residents have been enjoying a journey across the globe without ever leaving our luxury home. As part of our Around the World in 28 Days event, we have been celebrating different cultures through food, music, films, and interactive activities. The aim is to provide residents with a sense of adventure and discovery, bringing warmth and excitement to the winter months while promoting cultural appreciation.

Our first stop was China, where residents immersed themselves in traditional activities. They tried their hand at tai chi, a gentle form of exercise known for its relaxing and health-boosting benefits. They also played Chinese checkers which was new for many and sparked plenty of friendly competition. One of the highlights of the week was a delicious Chinese takeaway meal, featuring king prawn chow mein, sweet and sour king prawns, prawn curry, fried mangetout, white rice, and lychees for dessert. To round off the experience, residents watched The Inn of the Sixth Happiness in our cinema room, which inspired some thoughtful discussions.

The following week, we moved on to Italy, with residents exploring the country’s rich culinary traditions. They enjoyed a variety of Italian dishes, including bruschetta, spaghetti carbonara, Italian-style pork with sage and white wine, and a delightful tiramisu for dessert. Alongside these delicious meals, residents took part in a range of themed activities, such as online concerts featuring Italian artists, crossword puzzles, word searches, and colouring pages showcasing Italy’s most famous landmarks.

An especially engaging part of the appreciation weeks has been learning about the experiences of people who have immigrated to the UK from China and Italy. Residents listened to interviews and stories, gaining a deeper understanding of how different cultures contribute to British society. These discussions sparked meaningful conversations and strengthened the sense of connection within our home.

Beyond the fun and excitement, the Around the World in 28 Days event has brought a real sense of togetherness to Sandmere. By exploring different traditions, residents have not only broadened their cultural knowledge but have also shared memories, laughter, and new experiences with one another. These appreciation weeks have been a wonderful way to celebrate both the differences and shared values that connect people around the world.

Next, our journey continues with a visit to the USA and India, where even more exciting flavours, traditions, and activities await. We look forward to sharing more updates as our residents continue their cultural adventure!
